Getting Things Done

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with life?  Coming up on the holidays I have been feeling more and more overwhelmed.  There is so much to do and it feels like I do not have any time to accomplish anything!

I think one reason for this is because I am not very organized.  Therefore I have been looking into the GTD philosophy.  The guru of GTD is David Allen.  Recently on the Lifehacker blog they showed a video of David Allen with his office setup.  I was very intrigued as to how he has his office set up.  Take a look at the video below,  I know that I have picked up some things that I want to implement in my own office set up.  I hope you do too.

Lutheran Websites

There are three new Lutheran websites that this blog has been listed under.  I wanted to share these resources with you since there are other Lutheran (and non Lutheran) blogs listed under them.  If you want to see some of my favorite blogs check out the sidebar for those links.  Over the next several months I will try and tell you more about my favorite blogs.

But for now here are the Lutheran websites for your enjoyment:

1. Living Lutheran – This is a new site run by the ELCA.  There are stories about people living out their faith posted on the website. There is a great resource of Lutheran blogs, video’s and as well as other resources.  On the website you will find posts on culture, and there will be plenty of conversations about what is happening in the world from a Lutheran perspective.  I was a featured blogger on their website recently so you know it has to be good. :)

2.  Lutheran Central — This Lutheran website was launched in 2000.  However, after about a year the website was too much for one person to keep up so it stood dormant for a number of years.  In January of 2009 the site came back to life and it is a great resources for people to use to keep up on all things Lutheran. Their goal is to connect Lutherans on the web and there is lots of information on it so check it out.

3. Theological Degrees Online — This is not a “Lutheran” site.  This is a website that helps people find information about getting a theological degree.  The website is run by Timothy Dalton.  However, there is a post in his blog where he lists the Top 50 Lutheran Blogs and yours truly was listed number 12.  So if you want to know what is happening in the Lutheran Blog world check out this post – also if you are interested in pursuing a theological degree check out other parts of the website.

Lots of great information on all of those websites.  Check them out and feel free to link back so others can check them out as well.  The more we can get connected online the better off we will all be.

Sermon Podcasts

I have been tinkering around with podcasting for awhile now.  I think I have found a way to record, edit and upload my sermons on to this blog in a short amount of time.  I also have some other ideas to enhance the podcast experience.  Please enjoy these two podcasts that I have recently finished.  If you would like to see all the podcasts I have recorded, click on the Media page above.

Pastors 24

Recently a pastor and fellow blogger over at Hacking Christianity, declared Wednesday October 27th to be Pastors 24 day. He posted a project for pastors who are on twitter to tweet everything they do for a period of 24 hours.

Now I am not a big twitter user.  I have an account and I have some automatic tweets that go out from time to time, but I spend more of my time interacting with people on facebook than twitter.  I keep my twitter account because I think it is great for certain areas of ministry and life, but it is not something that I am really connected with right now.

I do however love participating in projects like this.  I was a heavy twitter user at the ELCA National Youth Gathering, and I am pretty connected with Twitter in the spring time as ELCA Synod’s have their gatherings and pastors and lay people from all over use twitter to let the world know what is happening in their Synod.

This project for me was fun to share with the world what I do on a daily basis.  I was more tuned into what I was doing because I had to share it.  I think it made me a better pastor.  I was less likely to get lost on facebook instead of working on my sermon or a Bible Study, I stayed with one project instead of going from one project to another, I was dedicated to finish what I started so I could include it in my tweets.

One of the neat things with #pastors24 was to see what other pastors do, and how much ministry is going on out there.  Not only did I see how other pastors used social media in their ministries and their lives but I got a gimps of the intentionality that many pastor’s have (like me) in praying for their congregational members when they see them online.  If a congregational member posts something on Facebook that is bothering them and I am not able to get a hold of them right away, I say a prayer for them.  I am not alone in this…..

I found many pastors starting their day either with some exercise, or devotional time.  It most likely centers them and prepares them for the day.  My day does not really “start” until about 8:30 after I spend a few hours helping my kids get up, and get prepared for the day.  It is only then that I grab a bite to eat and head out the door for work.  My devotional time comes more in the afternoon when the hustle and bustle of the day starts to quiet down.

Through this experience I have learned that  every stage of life there is an adjustment that we have to make in all aspects of who we are.  My spirituality needs to be adjusted when I have small children to when I have teenagers to when I become an empty nester.

Thank you fellow pastors for participating and teaching me more about this crazy life called ministry.  #pastors24

It Gets Better

I am part of the Evengelical Lutheran Church in America.  I have to say that we are privileged to have a great leader guiding the ELCA in Presiding Bishops in Mark Hanson.  He has lead this church during a time when numbers are down, people are upset, and in some places there is no sign of hope.  As I watch him in his leadership, I hope to one day be half of the leader that he is.

One of the reasons I admire Bishop Hanson is that recently he added his voice to the more than 3,000 videos in the It Gets Better project.  He spoke words of reassurance and hope to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.  He reminded them that they are beloved children of God.  No matter where you stand on LGBT issues, you have to agree that no one deserves to be bullied and treated poorly because of who they are or what they believe in.  Please watch the video below and share it with other people.

My Mess

This is my desk drawer at work.  Not too many people venture into it at this point.  This is a good thing because  it it pretty much impossible to find anything in there.

One of my faults (which I fully admit) is that I am not very organized.  Many times I get a piece of paper and it ends up in three piles before I know what to do with it.  Then I put it in a stack of papers and eventually I may get it in the proper file folder and in either a storage box or my file cabinet.   Until it gets to that point it most likely goes in my bag which looks like this:

Not a pleasent sight for anyone!

My hope  is to do as much as I can digitally.  Thanks to Evernote I am able to scan documents into the computer and get myself organized.  Once that happens I can show you pictures of my nice and neat bag with only a few pieces of paper in it.

Connect Four Million

I am a big fan of LOST and I am going to dearly miss it when the series ends in only a few weeks.  As much as I love it, there is room to make fun of the show.  Jimmy Kimmel had a great commercial staring Jacob and his brother  ”Mr. Black…enjoy

What's on your iphone home screen?

This is a question I like to ask my friends who have an iphone.  I have checked out different apps that people have to see if I like them and if I would find them useful.  Right now I have about 100 apps on my phone.  The way I have things set up that equals to about 8 pages of apps.  Here is how I have them broken down.

Page 1 – The top apps that I use on a daily basis

Page 2 – Apps that on a semi-regular basis

Page 3- Again, apps that I use on a semi-regular basis

Page 4 and 5 — Games

Page 6-7 – Apps that are more “fun” apps that might pose themselves useful in certain situations

Page 8 -  Apps that are installed by apple that I will most likely never use (stocks, clock, you tube, ect)

That’s how it is broken down for me.  I would like to share the most useful apps for me, the ones that I use on a daily basis on my home screen.

Iphone Home ScreenContacts — I considered moving this to the last page on my iphone because I am not sure how often I use it vs going to the phone app on the bottom of the phone.  But for now I will keep it where it is at.

Calendar - I would be lost without my calendar app.  I also need to make sure that I add things in there — otherwise I can very easily double-book myself.  Right now I have my calendar synced with my Google Calendar directly.

Facebook - Need I say more?  I love facebook and I am on there all the time thanks to my Facebook app.

Weight Watchers Mobile- My wife and I recently joined up with weight watchers -  I don’t think I would keep track of my points if it was not for this app.  This app is the main reason that I signed up for Weight Watchers.

Byline -  This is my mobile blog RSS reader.  This syncs up nicely with my Google Reader.  Right now I subscribe to 89 blogs (I will try and update my link page to reflect that soon).

Maps-  I used this all the time before I got my GPS.  Since my iPhone is the first generation (2G) the GPS capability for my phone is not as good as the 3G or 3Gs.  In a pinch I still will use this app.

Tweetdeck – This app is my go to mobile Twitter app.  I like how it syncs with my desktop version.

Evernote -  I love the concept of Evernote and I am trying to use it to its full potential.  Recently I found  a great blog post on Evernote at The 2.0 Life.  This has really helped me in my search for the best way to use Evernote.

Olive Tree NASB Bundle – This is my Bible Reader of choice.  Olive Tree is a great company for anything that has to do with religious mobile readers.  This is the most expensive app that I bought (because I got the NRSV bundle) but it is well worth it, as a pastor I use it all the time.

Camera – The camera in the iphone isn’t the great but it is better than nothing.

Messages – I use this for text messages…duh!  I can’t wait until I am able to use the MMS messages (when I get the 3GS)

PocketMoney - I use this to keep track of my expenses on the run.  This is a great companion with YNAB.

IPod - My iPod – I have some of my favorite songs and videos on here.

GuitarToolkit -  I use this all the time with my guitar.  It is a great tuner and chord finder.

Sirius -  I love Sirius Radio.  I love how Sirius Radio is on the iPhone, I would love it even more if I could listen to the Patriots on my iPhone.

Then on the bottom of my phone I have the apps I use most often:

Phone — Duhh, it IS a phone you know

Mail -  I am obsessed with my email, so this works nicely for me

Safari -  I use Firefox on my desktop but this is a great way to surf the web on the run

reQall - I used Remember The Milk for a long time as my Todo app.  But a friend told me about reQall and I think it is great.  I especially love how I can add my todo’s with a voice recorder.

Social Networking Round 1: Facebook vs. Myspace

Unless you live under a rock you know that social networking is the latest thing.  There are people 13-103 are signing up for facebook, twitter, and everything in between. It is about time for me to weigh-in on the latest and greatest of social networking. I will let you know the winners and losers of the different sites out there. I will also evaluate them based on the usefulness of ministry. There are some sites that over lap with one another so I will first compare and then give my summary.

The first round is Facebook vs. Myspace

Myspace

I just went to myspace to see if I can still log into it. Let’s just say I was not successful on my first try. The last comment made on my page is from September 2008. I really do not have any use for this site and I hardly go on it anymore. For awhile myspace was the best thing out there. Now when I go on it the ads are very intrusive and they seem to get in the way when I try and navigate the site.  One of the positives that that the pages is editable, however I personally think that some of the designs are more distracting than anything else.

I have not seen any way that I can take advantage of this site in my ministry.  First there are not as many people using the site as in the past.  Second I don’t know how I would use it if I could, there are not many opportunities to use it.

Evaluation: Not very useful

Ministry opportunity: None

Facebook

This is probably my favorite social networking site out there. This is where all aspects of my life (home, college, camp, seminary, family, ministry) come together. I think I really enjoy facebook because of the number of people I can interact with on a daily basis. I always have some sort of friend on so if I need to talk with someone they are there. I can also keep up with the daily activities of my friends. Some people say that sites like facebook lessens the face to face interaction that people have with one another, and that might be true to a certain point. However for someone who works full time in ministry, has a family and personal enjoyment activities — I am not sure how much time I would have to keep up with my friends on a daily basis anyway!  I think the extravert in me loves to be able to interact with my friends when I want too and I have even made new friends through facebook.

For ministry facebook can be a great thing, over the years I have connected with the kids in my youth group on facebook. As a pastor I have set up a “fan” page for my church so the different members can become fans and I can update these fan pages with description of different events that are happening within the church.  It is a great way to connect with people and it is a great way to get information out there that the members of my church want/need to know.

Evaluation: Very important in personal life

Ministry Opportunity: Very useful

The winner between these two sites is Facebook, by a knockout in the first round.
