Monday Morning Church: Authentic Reformation

This Sunday, most if not all Lutheran Churches in the world will be celebrating Reformation Sunday.  For those who might not know, on October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to the door of the The Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany.  The 95 Theses argues that Catholic Church was not acting in the appropriate manner regarding baptism and absolution. One of the major problems that Luther had with the church at the time involved  indulgences (remissions of temporal punishment due for sins which have already been forgiven).  Luther wanted to be authentic to what the Gospel was saying, he wanted to follow his heart when it came to Jesus’ words.

Can we do the same thing?  What does it mean to be authentic in today’s world?

We do not have to go out there and try and change the world like Luther did.   We do not have to be different for thesake of standing out of the crowd.  We just need to be true to what God is calling us too.   We need to sit down and discern where God is calling us in this crazy world.

Authenticity is a word that is used quite often these days.  Many people are trying to figure out what it means to be authentic, and if it is a good and necessary thing or not.
So what does it mean to be Authentic?

First of all, authentic people (or churches) are aware of their thoughts and feelings, and they behave in ways that reflect those feelings. They don’t try to be someone or something that they are not.  They don’t try to put on an act or a show to impress others.  They take advantage of their strengths and they accept their weaknesses.

When they accept themselves for both their strengths and weaknesses other people will start to accept them as well.

So, if you want to grow as a person (or as a church), take time to really know yourself. If you’re not completely happy with what you find, don’t worry too much. Work on accepting yourself for what
you are, right here, right now, and on being truly authentic.

This week’s Text

We have a wonderful group who meets every Tuesday morning to talk about the upcoming texts: If you are unable to make those meetings feel free to use this sampling as to what God is telling us this week.

The first lesson is Jeremiah 31:31-34.  Just when you think you have God figured out He changes everything!  In this text God realizes that people are not going to change.  We make promises to God “empty promises” if you will.  So God is going to approach things differently.  God says that he is going to make a new covenant, something different, something exciting!  Instead of leading people by the hand God is going to lead people through their hearts.
When have you changed the way you do things?  Did it make things easier or harder?  What do you think of a changing God?

The second lesson is Romans 3:19-28.  When I think of Reformation Sunday I think of this verse.  In this verse Paul talks about we are made righteous through Jesus Christ not by the law.  Paul says to us that if we were to take away only one thing from the Gospel is that we are justified by our faith alone….that the grace of God is a gift.
What does that mean to you?  If we are justified by faith, what does it mean if our faith is shaken?  Would you be disappointed if the only gift you got in life was the grace of God?

The Gospel is John 8:31-36.  Jesus tells the Jews and he tells us that the truth will make us free.  What does it mean to be free?  How do you know if you are free or not?  What is the truth?

In light of all these texts we will be celebrating the Reformation as well.  If you have any thoughts on these texts, or on the Reformation feel free toemail me.

Monday Morning Church: Dreams

This is from my weekly email to the good people of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.  If you would like to receive this email sign up here.

What do you see when you close your eyes?

When I say the word “dream” what do you think about?

Do you think about the crazy images that come to your mind when you are asleep? Or do you get tired and run down because you think about all the things that you dream of accomplishing in your life but you have not gotten to them yet? Or do you get energized and excited with the hopes and dreams of your future?

We all have dreams of what we want to be when we “grow up”. When you were a kid what did you dream about? What did you want to become? When we dream our hearts are lifted up because dreams inspire us and give us a sense of passion and purpose in our life.

The last few weeks we have been dreaming about our future together as St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Baldwinsville, NY. I want to thank you once again for dreaming with me about our future for mission in the church and in the community. We had a wonderful celebration yesterday and I can’t wait to see our dreams come to life.

As we celebrate our dreams as a community we must also realized that within the community there are individual dreams. There are some people within our community who live out their dreams on a daily basis, there are others who have put their dreams in a little box for safe keeping. When we put our dreams in a box we can claim that we have a dream but rarely do we open our box to see what is inside. Then what happens to our dreams?

There are other occasions when we start to see our hope and dreams come to life. But then something happens, something that brings our dreams to an end – if you do feel like that or have felt like that in the past you know it hurts. The book club is currently reading Plan B by Pete Wilson where he explores some of those deep questions.

As we start to live out our dreams as a community and as we support one another in our personal dreams, I ask you to take out your box, to put it into your heart and mind, and build your life around it. See your dreams, set goals toward it, share it with those around you, and pray about it. Don’t get caught living your life with no hope, no dreams no visions for how your life is going to be, and if you have to go to “plan B” know that you have love and support while you do it.

My Mess

This is my desk drawer at work.  Not too many people venture into it at this point.  This is a good thing because  it it pretty much impossible to find anything in there.

One of my faults (which I fully admit) is that I am not very organized.  Many times I get a piece of paper and it ends up in three piles before I know what to do with it.  Then I put it in a stack of papers and eventually I may get it in the proper file folder and in either a storage box or my file cabinet.   Until it gets to that point it most likely goes in my bag which looks like this:

Not a pleasent sight for anyone!

My hope  is to do as much as I can digitally.  Thanks to Evernote I am able to scan documents into the computer and get myself organized.  Once that happens I can show you pictures of my nice and neat bag with only a few pieces of paper in it.

Church, Cars, and Kids

I can’t believe it has been two weeks since I have posted anything!  It has not been to the lack of exciting stuff to talk about, or the lack of interest.  But I must say that our lives recently have been crazy!

First, things at church: They have been good.  We as a congregation are in the midst of talking about the mission and vision for our church.  It is exciting because I can see how things are coming together and how God is making it all happen!  We are talking about establishing a enhanced youth program and a theater ministry at the church.  I LOVE talking about this stuff and people are responding both with excitement and hopefully with their time and talents as well.

But with all the good news there is sometimes bad news.  Our family has experienced a lot of car problems in the past month.  We have delt with many car places, dishonest people, our trusty mechanic, sales people, managers, and have had many headachs.  I never realized how dependent we are on our cars – it has opened my eyes but has also scared me.  What would happen, long term if we did not have a car?  Could we survive?  Right now my answer is no!  Can we get by with just ONE car?  We will see…..

With the bad news about the car we have seen another side….we have seen generosity and support from lots of people. There have been people giving of themselves and their possessions to help us out and that means the world to us.  My number one priority in my life is my family and to witness people supporting us in our time of need really touches my heart.

Finally the kids, ahhh yes the children….  They are well — Addy is in preschool and she is really enjoying it.  She is the “shy” one but she has no problem getting dropped off.  She is coming into her own as a young lady and she always makes me smile.

Lojo is adjusting well to first grade.  The big news in our house is that he lost his first tooth!  It totally changes the way that I look at him.  He is growing up so fast….
